Why Recycled Doesn't Stop at the Product

Why Recycled Doesn't Stop at the Product

Sustainability doesn’t stop at the things we make. From packaging made with recycled materials to hand-printed Christmas wrap, we’re big believers in making thoughtful choices, reducing waste and using what already exists wherever we can.

At HausKat, we don't just believe in giving forgotten objects a second life. We believe that philosophy should run through everything we do.

From the moment we rescue an old fire hose, a weathered workshop cabinet or a century-old weaving bobbin, to the moment it arrives on your doorstep, we're constantly asking ourselves one simple question:

Can this be done in a way that's kinder to the planet?

The answer, more often than not, is yes.

Every Parcel Matters

The furniture, lighting and homeware we create all begin life as something else. Rather than manufacturing new products from scratch, we transform industrial objects and forgotten furniture into pieces full of character, history and purpose.

It wouldn't feel right to send those pieces out wrapped in packaging made from brand-new materials.

That's why every order leaving our workshop is packed using packaging made from recycled materials. Our cardboard boxes, paper void fill, protective paper and paper tape are all chosen because they're produced using recycled content wherever possible, helping to reduce the demand for virgin materials while still protecting your order on its journey across the UK.

It might not be the first thing you notice when your parcel arrives, but to us, it's another way of making sure our values don't stop at the product itself.

Doing Things the Right Way

Businesses across the UK are being encouraged—and increasingly expected—to reduce packaging waste and improve the sustainability of the materials they use. As environmental legislation continues to evolve, using packaging made from recycled materials is becoming an increasingly important part of responsible retail.

For us, though, it isn't about following a trend or ticking a compliance box.

It's simply common sense.

If we're saving industrial objects from landfill, why would we undo some of that good work by surrounding them with unnecessary virgin packaging?

Thoughtful, Not Performative

We're not interested in sustainability as a marketing buzzword.

We'd rather make hundreds of small, sensible decisions that collectively have a positive impact.

That means choosing recycled materials where we can, avoiding unnecessary plastic, using paper tape instead of plastic tape, and constantly looking for better ways to reduce waste without compromising on quality or the safe arrival of your order.

It's not about claiming perfection.

It's about doing better, wherever we can.

It's More Than Just Business

The funny thing is, this mindset follows us home too.

Every Christmas, we make our own crackers instead of buying disposable ones filled with plastic novelties. We wrap presents in simple brown paper that we hand-print ourselves, seal everything with paper tape, and keep things beautifully understated rather than drowning them in shiny plastic wrapping.

It's become a bit of a tradition in our house, and one we genuinely look forward to every year.

For us, sustainability isn't something that starts when we open the workshop door and ends when we lock up. It's simply part of how we choose to live.

Every Choice Tells a Story

When you buy from HausKat, you're buying more than a unique piece of furniture or lighting.

You're supporting a business that believes thoughtful design extends beyond the object itself—from the materials we rescue, to the way we make, photograph and package each piece, right through to the moment it arrives at your home.

Every decision matters.

Because if we're asking old furniture to have a second chance, shouldn't the materials we use around it deserve the same consideration?

What everyday choices could you change today that your future self—and the planet—might thank you for?
