At first glance, a lamp is just a lamp.

It sits on a table, casts a warm glow across a room and hopefully earns the odd compliment from friends who visit. But behind every lamp in our workshop is a journey that started months before the switch was ever flicked.

Unlike mass-produced lighting, every HausKat lamp begins with a search.

That search might take us to a muddy car boot sale at 6am, an industrial auction, a forgotten corner of an antiques market or hours scouring the internet for something extraordinary has been waiting decades for a second chance. We don't know what we'll find, or when inspiration will hit and that's part of the fun.

Sometimes we come home empty-handed.

Sometimes we find a piece that's worth driving across the country for.

It all starts with seeing potential

Old garden sprayers, weaving bobbins, textile mill equipment, engineering components and industrial tools weren't designed to become lamps.

Most people see scrap.

We see beautiful metalwork, incredible typography, honest wear and decades of history that deserve another chapter.

Finding those pieces isn't the hard part though.

Knowing which ones can be transformed safely, sympathetically and without losing their character is where experience comes in.

Restoration isn't about making something look new

One of the questions we're asked most often is whether we polish everything until it shines.

Usually, the answer is no.

We spend hours carefully cleaning away decades of grime, removing corrosion where necessary and stabilising finishes, but we're careful not to erase the marks that tell the story. Every dent, scratch and worn edge has been earned over decades of working life.

It's a balancing act, too much restoration and you lose the object's soul, too little and it never reaches its full potential. The aim is to preserve the history whilst ensuring it's future.

The bit you can't always see matters the most

The outside might be what catches your eye, but it's what's inside that really matters.

Every HausKat lamp is completely rewired using quality components that comply with current UK standards and compliment the materials of the object. We use properly rated three-core braided cable, quality lampholders, switches and plugs from trusted suppliers rather than the cheapest parts available.

More importantly, every completed lamp has extensive electrical testing before it ever leaves our workshop.

That means checking earth continuity, insulation resistance and polarity, alongside a thorough visual inspection to make sure everything meets the standard we'd expect in our own home.

It isn't the glamorous part of making a lamp, it's also not the part most people see in photographs, but it's arguably the most important.

There are plenty of decorative industrial lamps available online, yet not all lighting sold in the UK is built with the same attention to electrical safety. We believe beautiful design should never come at the expense of peace of mind. That's why our lamps are built using compliant components, tested before sale and carry the appropriate UKCA marking where required.

Then comes the design

The cable colour, the metal finish, the lamp holder, the switch, the plug, the bulb. None of those decisions are accidental.

A French weaving bobbin might suit a warm mustard braided cable, while a century-old brass sprayer feels completely different paired with antique gold fittings or an army blue flex. Sometimes we'll spend longer deciding on the final details than we do cleaning the piece itself.

Those little choices are what make a lamp feel complete rather than assembled.

The work doesn't stop when the lamp is finished

Once the wiring is complete and every test has been passed, there's still a surprising amount left to do.

The lamp needs photographing from every angle, styled in a setting that helps you imagine it in your own home and edited so the colours are true to life.

Then comes researching the object's history, writing product descriptions, measuring dimensions, preparing care information, creating social media content, designing marketing material, answering customer questions and packaging it safely so it arrives exactly as it left our workshop.

By the time a single lamp appears on our website, many hours have been invested that you'll never see.

And that's perfectly fine.

The finished piece should feel effortless.

More than a lamp

What you're really bringing home isn't simply a source of light.

It's a one-of-a-kind object that has survived decades before arriving in our workshop.

It's hours spent searching for the right piece rather than ordering another identical base from a catalogue.

It's thoughtful restoration instead of replacement.

It's careful craftsmanship, modern electrical safety and countless small decisions that most people will never notice—but would certainly miss if they weren't there.

When the light comes on, that's only the final chapter.
